The Psychology of Colour

Although there are obviously cultural differences (in China white is associated with death, not black as in western culture) the following is generally applicable. Each colour also can have some negative connotations.

COOL COLOURS: These are serious colours, used for ecclesiastical robes and related to service.

Purple: Reserved for the royal family and hierarchal rank.

Indigo: Service, respect, tradition.

Blue: Peace, silence, the soul, the truth (but also cold, sadness and lack of emotion).

The cool and warm colours are separated by green. Green: Tranquility, growth, nature.

WARM COLOURS: These colours represent energy, emotion and danger.

Yellow: Happiness, warmth, luck, hope, wealth (but also cowardice and disease).

Orange: The balance of intellectual energy (but a VERY difficult colour to wear).

Red: Energy, vitality, life, bravery (but also aggression, blood and sex).

ACHROMATICS:

White: Purity, hygiene, untouchable.

Black: Wickedness, mourning, emptiness

Grey: Neither one thing nor the other, therefore neutral.
