COLOUR ANALYSIS AND THE WHEEL

THEORY Colour analysis is used to find the best colours for each person.

First of all, we want to know if we are working with cool or warm colours depending on genetics.

The Munsell scale is used to define the degree of lightness-darkness of the colour. 0 black 10 white. This is most often used in hairdressing. Hair colour is usually defined as X1. X2. X1 is a dark/light reference X2 is a cool/warm reference

This scale is used to define the use of colour in harmony with the cameo area.

The intensity of colour: strong/bright or soft/muted is often an outward manifestation of the personality, not only the physical / visual appearance.

NEUTRAL COLOURS

Neutral colours and black and white (achromatics) are colours which stay neutral and are not affected when placed side by side. They do not modify a neighbouring colour. They do not compete with other colours.

This is why they mix and match with most of the other colours and should be used for the garments that make up your basic wardrobe.

Cool hues - neutrals Black, navy, dark grey, taupe, cool beige, wine, silver, white

Warm hues - neutrals Dark brown, coffee, tan, olive green, beige, cream, ivory

THE WHEEL

Most traditional methods of colour analysis are similar.

They use coloured drapes which are compared to classify clients as cool or warm based and then referenced to dark/light and strong/soft colours.

Very often these groups of colours are given the names of the 4 seasons of the year. Cross colours are then added to cover the 馬eutral groundwhere 2 seasons meet. In other words colours that merge into both 都easons

The warm/cool division….warm seasons: autumn/spring cool seasons: winter/summer The dark/light division…… darker: autumn(warm)/winter(cool) lighter: spring(warm)/summer(cool) The strong/soft division … .. stronger: spring(warm)/winter(cool) softer: autumn(warm)/summer(cool)

AUTUMN common colours SPRING darker lighter softer stronger

X colours X colours

WINTER common colours SUMMER darker lighter stronger softer

There are also X colours between the stronger seasons of spring/winter

And the softer seasons of autumn/summer

Autumn and Spring have a lot of colours in common.

Autumn also has darker, deeper colours and crossover colours with Winter and Summer. The general effect is soft, but due to the crossover colours there are also some vibrant colours, some softer pastels and some blue colours.

Spring also has lighter, brighter colours and crossover colours with Winter and Summer. The general effect is strong, but due to the crossover colours there are also some softer colours and some blue colours.

Winter and Summer have a lot of colours in common.

Winter also has darker colours and black, much lighter "ice" colours, strong colours and crossover colours with Autumn and Spring. The general effect is strong, but due to the crossover colours there are also some warmer "yellow-based" colours.

Summer also has softer, medium tones and crossover colours with Autumn and Spring. The general effect is soft, but due to the crossover colours there are also some warmer colours including brown.
